Electric cooperatives provide safe and reliable electric service to both rural and suburban areas throughout the Commonwealth. Virginia’s 13 consumer-owned electric cooperatives provide electricity to over 490,000 meters serving more than a million of the citizens of the Com monwealth residing in 68 of 95 counties. Electric cooperatives are not-for-profit organizations with revenues in excess of expenses being returned to their consumers. Electric cooperatives and their members are major taxpayers in the state and pay tens of millions in state and local taxes each year.
The electric cooperatives are committed to providing environmentally sound energy. Over $350 million of the cost of the Clover Power Station was for environmental safeguards. Old Domini on operates an energy conservation program in partnership with its members that can reduce peak loads by more than 10 percent.
